The Criminal Investigation Division provides support services to on-going investigations that require dedicated resources through the Major Crimes Section and the Organized Crimes Section. Specialized units engage in serious and complicated criminal investigations. This division focuses on key areas such as: • Violent Crimes – Investigating crimes of violence, including homicide, home invasions, robberies, kidnapping, sex crime and family violence, with the support of social workers working along side police officers where children are victimized. • Forensic Identification - Collecting, preserving, handling and presenting crime scene evidence in court. • Crime Analysis – Assessing crime signatures, modus operandi, geographical locations, time and date, and other data related to crime committed within the region. • Property Crimes – Investigating break and enter, stolen property, arson, and other matters that daily affect individual and corporate citizens. • Serious Habitual Offenders - Identifying young persons heading for a life of crime and serious offenders, analyzing their criminal history, reintegrating them into society, providing access to all available resources and ensuring compliance with parole and probation conditions, as required. • Special Operations – Focusing on vice crimes, surveillance, special covert operations, and drug interdiction. • Criminal Intelligence – Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information on the actions, movement and associations of members and groups of organized criminals in partnership with municipal, provincial, and federal law enforcement agencies. • Economic Crimes – Investigating offences related to fraud, theft and forgery. • National Weapons Enforcement - Providing support through the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) to front-line police officers in gathering evidence in order to assist them in successfully prosecuting persons involved in the illegal movement and criminal use of firearms. • Gaming – Investigating criminal and provincial offences surrounding the gaming industry. The Criminal Investigation Division acts as a support to front line service delivery unit and sustains the necessary expertise to manage high-risk criminal events.
