Police Commission

The Lethbridge Regional Police Service (LRPS) was established February 1, 2004 by a community driven initiative to amalgamate the police services of the Town of Coaldale and the City of Lethbridge. The Service is accountable to the citizens of Lethbridge and Coaldale through the Lethbridge Regional Police Commission that consists of nine persons, three council members and six citizens selected from the community. The Commission is responsible to ensure an adequate and effective regional police service is maintained by overseeing the police service, allocating funds provided by both councils, and establishing policies that provide for efficient and effective policing. They are also required to issue instructions to the Chief as required and ensure that sufficient persons are employed by the police service for the purpose of carrying out its mandate of sustaining safe communities.

In addition to meeting Provincial standards, the Lethbridge Regional Police Service is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The CALEA accreditation process involves a comprehensive agency self-assessment and on-site assessment of the 436 key standards. The Lethbridge Regional Police Service recently underwent a third accreditation.
