Annual Polar Plunge fundraiser for Special Olympics goes this weekend

Lethbridge Regional Police and the Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) are inviting citizens to take the plunge on Saturday – alone or as part of a team – to help raise funds for Special Olympics.

The 4th Annual Polar Plunge – Freezin’ for a Reason – is set for Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 from noon until 4 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Lake. In addition to the icy dip, this family-friendly fundraising event includes music, prizes, a costume contest and more.

Adventurous residents ready to brave the chilly waters may take the plunge alone or as part of team by making a donation. For those who want to contribute but would rather remain bundled up on dry land can also make a donation and receive a “Too Chicken to Plunge” T-shirt. All proceeds go to Special Olympics.

The actual plunge into Nicholas Sheran Lake will take place at 1 p.m. on Feb. 21 and interested participants are asked to register and submit their donations at the Nicholas Sheran Picnic Shelter from noon until 1 p.m. the day of the event.

For safety reasons, there will be no diving, no cannonballs and no somersaults. Plungers must wear a swimsuit or other clothing and are reminded to bring dry gear to change into after their dip. Men’s and women’s change rooms are also available on site, however there will be no secure storage for valuables.

The Police Service would like to thank all the generous sponsors of this event – 20th Independent Field Battery for providing tents for change rooms, Arctic Spa for providing a hot tub for plungers to warm up in, Westech Sanitation Systems for providing portable washrooms, Western One Rental for providing a generator, McDonalds for providing hot drinks and hamburgers for plungers and Mocha Cabana for donating prizes for the best dressed team and the individual who raises the most money. Special thanks to the Lethbridge Fire Department Dive team who will help prep the plunge site and be on hand to ensure everyone’s safety in the icy water.
