ASIRT investigating incident involving physical altercation between an LPS officer and male subject

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an incident involving a physical altercation between a Lethbridge Police Service officer and a male subject on October 28, 2018 –  a portion of which was caught on video and posted to social media.

On October 28, 2018 at approximately 1:30 a.m. police responded to reports of a large, out-of-control party involving 100-150 intoxicated youths at La Cite Des Prairies along the 600 block of 21 Street South. Upon arrival, various confrontations occurred  and an officer was involved in a physical altercation with a young man on the scene. A 37-second video of a portion of the altercation was later circulated on social media.

An 18-year-old male subject depicted in the video as having had contact with the officer while he was engaged with the first man has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, disarming or attempting to disarm a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer.

Following review of the video, a notification was made to the Director of Law Enforcement as required under Section 46.1 of the Police Act in relation to matters that are deemed serious or sensitive in nature. An independent ASIRT investigation was subsequently directed.

“I have the utmost confidence in our officers and the training we provide,” said Deputy Chief Scott Woods. “Transparency is critical to maintaining the public’s trust and as a Service we welcome this independent investigation by ASIRT.”

All further media inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to ASIRT. LPS will not provide any additional comment in order to protect the integrity of the ASIRT investigation. There will be no media availability.
