On April 28, 2016 Lethbridge EMS responded to a report of a nine-month-old boy in medical distress at a residence along the 600 block of 17 Street North. Upon arrival paramedics located Austin Wright inside the home. He was not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Austin was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Family members originally reported to police that Austin had stopped breathing. An autopsy was subsequently conducted and determined he died as a result of blunt force trauma and his death was declared a homicide. The fatal trauma Austin sustained was not consistent with a fall.
