Coalhurst man charged with assaulting police officer, resisting arrest

Lethbridge Police have charged a 32-year-old man with assaulting a peace officer.

Just after midnight on January 21, 2017 police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Lethbridge Casino along the 3700 block of 2 Avenue North after a male became angry at an employee and refused to leave the building. The male was arrested for trespassing and as he was being taken into custody he struck an officer, forcing her backwards and causing her head to hit the floor. The male continued to fight and resist a second officer, who was assisted by a security guard and an off-duty officer who noted the commotion and stepped in to help. As additional officers arrived on scene the male was eventually secured.

The injured officer was transported to hospital for treatment of a head injury. She remains off work at this time but is expected to make a full recovery.
