Retired Lethbridge Police Insp. Jeff Cove has been appointed as the new Manager of The Watch.
Cove, who retired from LPS in 2014, has been a volunteer with The Watch program since its inception last May and has enjoyed returning to his roots walking the beat – this time as an ambassador.
“I got involved with The Watch as a volunteer because it was great opportunity to contribute and give back to the community,” said Jeff Cove. “ I have truly enjoyed being a part of this initiative from Day 1 as a volunteer and now I’m looking forward to working with this committed group of people in a different way.”
The Watch is comprised mostly of volunteers who walk throughout the downtown core seven days a week all year long to provide an additional layer of safety to citizens by serving as a visible presence and helping to connect people with the appropriate response from police, EMS or social and community services. In addition, The Watch provides Safe Walks as well as a myriad of other public engagement activities from helping people with parking meters, providing directions, liaising with downtown business owners and patrons and serving as positive community ambassadors.
Since joining The Watch Cove’s experience has enabled him to serve as a mentor for many of the younger volunteers and he has no plans to put aside his walking shoes. As manager, Cove will continue to be out on the street with his team from time to time.
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Jeff Cove will be available for interviews today at the police station at 1:30 p.m. This will be the only opportunity for on-camera interviews.
