Investigation into anti-Semitic Facebook post concluded without criminal charges

The Lethbridge Police Service has concluded an investigation into an anti-Semitic image and comment posted to a city man’s personal Facebook page, without criminal charges.

The matter was initially reported as a hate crime to the Calgary Police Service in August and further reported to the Lethbridge Police Service on Sept. 8. The content, which included an image of an Orthodox Jew being assaulted and an anti-Semitic screed beside it, was posted to a Lethbridge man’s personal Facebook page by a third party. The post was removed from the Facebook account a short time later and the account of the person who posted it, deleted.

Investigation determined the post, while extremely offensive and inappropriate, does not meet the threshold for intent set out in the Criminal Code of Canada for advocating genocide or public incitement of hatred.

The complainant has been advised of the outcome of the file.

As no criminal charges were laid no further information will be released.
