Lethbridge man charged with second-degree murder in the death of nine-month-old baby

Lethbridge Police have charged a 40-year-old man with the murder of a nine-month-old baby boy that had been left in his care.

On April 28, 2016 Lethbridge EMS responded to a report of a baby in medical distress at a residence along the 600 block of 17 Street North. Upon arrival paramedics located nine-month-old Austin Wright inside the home. He was not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Austin was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation by members of the Violent Crimes Unit determined that Austin had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, while she went to work. While in the man’s care the baby began crying and was subsequently assaulted sustaining extensive, life-threatening injuries. The male initially reported to police that Austin had just stopped breathing but an autopsy determined the little boy died as a result of blunt force trauma not consistent with a fall.

On the morning of July 27, 2016 the male was arrested by police without incident and later charged.

Tyler Brian Hogan, 40, of Lethbridge is charged with one count of second-degree murder. He is remanded in custody to appear in court today.
