A three-day joint forces project targeting unsafe commercial vehicles concluded Thursday with the majority of vehicles checked failing their inspection.
From Aug. 14 to 17, Lethbridge Police, along with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, the Calgary Police Service, Community Peace Officers, Alberta Sheriffs and Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration, checked a total of 179 commercial vehicles to determine compliance with safety regulations. Of those, 75 per cent failed the inspection and 56 per cent were immediately placed out of service. Mechanical issues, such as defective or ineffective brakes, equipment problems and cargo securement were the most common violations.
Failure and out of service rates are slightly higher this year compared to last year.
