Man charged with assault in connection with bear spray incident

Lethbridge Police have charged a 31-year-old man after bear spray was discharged at a Christmas party.

On Dec. 18, 2016 at 3:10 p.m. approximately 50 people – many of them young children – were attending a church group Christmas party at Galaxy Bowling along the 1700 block of 23 Street North. A male entered the business and began yelling and swearing at a group of children. A 49-year-old male church group leader asked the subject to leave and staff called police. The subject began yelling threats then reached into his bag and produced a can of bear spray. The church group leader was able to get the subject outside and away from the children but was subsequently sprayed in the face. No one else was injured.

Police arrested the subject outside the business. The can of bear spray was also seized.

Nathan James Wolf Child, 31, is charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, unauthorized possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon, possession of a prohibited firearm.

Wolf Child was remanded in custody and scheduled to make is his first court appearance today.
