Man charged following stand off with police

On December 28 at approximately 8:30 PM Lethbridge Police Service were contacted regarding an assault with weapon which occurred inside a residence located in the 100 block of Fairmont BD South.  Due to information received that the subject pointed a firearm at one of the callers inside the residence, responding patrol units surrounded and contained the residence and attempted to make contact with the subject inside.  The subject refused to communicate with police and at that time the service’s Critical Incident Team was called out and assumed command of the situation.

Further attempts to make contact with the subject were completed and he still refused to speak with police or exit the residence.  Several less lethal interventions were deployed by the tactical team which resulted in the subject, along with another female, exiting the residence and they were taken into police custody.  The female in the residence was later released without charges.

Police later searched the residence and recovered several firearms.  As a result of further police investigation Kyle Lee Toshi Mitten, 20 years old of Lethbridge, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Mischief under $5000 x 2
  • Use of firearm while committed offence

He is currently in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.
