Police charge male with assault and robbery

Lethbridge Police have charged a 36-year-old male following two incidents over the weekend where men were attacked in north side alleys.

On September 14, 2019 police responded to two reports of incidents where a male in a red truck assaulted men in north side alleys. Investigation determined at approximately 9:45 p.m. a 37-year-old man was walking in the alley along the 500 block of 13 Street North when a red truck stopped beside him. A male passenger got out of the truck and following a brief verbal exchange, struck the victim twice with a baseball bat, then searched through a wallet in his backpack and stole cash before returning to the vehicle and leaving the scene.  A short time later at approximately 10 p.m. a 42-year-old-man walking in the alley along the 600 block of 13 Street North was confronted by a male passenger in a red truck. The male yelled at the victim then pepper sprayed him in the face before fleeing in the truck. The subject and victims are not known to one another. Following further investigation, on the evening of September 15, 2019 the driver and passenger were identified and both were arrested without incident.

Michael Joseph K Smith, 36, is charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, assault with a weapon and robbery. Smith is currently in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.

The driver of the vehicle was released without charges.
