Police charge male with assaulting an officer and possession of stolen vehicles

Lethbridge Police have charged a 31-year-old male in connection with multiple crimes including assaulting an officer, evading police and possession of stolen property.

On Nov. 29, 2018 police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle (Hyundai Sonata) along Fairmont Point South. Upon querying the license plate it was determined the Sonata had previously been reported stolen. Upon arrival, the officer located the vehicle with the driver – who was known to police – inside. As he approached the vehicle the officer directed the driver to exit. Instead the male driver put the vehicle in gear and fled the area, colliding with a parked police car and forcing the officer back in order to avoid being run over. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed down the wrong side of the road and at one point drove onto the sidewalk. The vehicle was later located on December 2, 2018 in a back alley on the north side.

On Dec. 2, 2018 police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle (Chevrolet Malibu) parked in the alley along the 1300 block of St. Arthur Road North with a male passed out behind the wheel. Police attended and upon recognizing the driver as being involved in the previous incident Nov. 29 where a police car was rammed, boxed the vehicle in to prevent it from leaving. The driver was still asleep with the keys in the ignition and upon waking up, was removed from the vehicle.

Investigation determined the Malibu had been reported stolen Dec. 1. A search of the suspect incidental to arrest resulted in police recovering the keys for a Hyundai Sonata. They keys were determined to belong to the stolen Sonata that had been recovered earlier in the day. As the driver displayed signs of impairment by street narcotics and a crack pipe and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the vehicle, he was assessed by a Drug Recognition Expert and bodily fluid samples collected and forwarded to the RCMP lab for analysis.

Michael Hahn, 31, of Lethbridge, is charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, disqualified driving, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, operate a motor vehicle without a subsisting certificate of registration, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, failing to stop for a peace officer and two counts of breach of a recognizance. Additional charges are pending.

Hahn has been remanded in custody to appear in court December 7.
