Police continue to investigate suspicious social media posts referencing west side high school

Lethbridge police have one male in custody and continue to investigate an incident where suspicious posts regarding Chinook High School were circulated on social media.

On September 25, 2017 at approximately 11 p.m. police responded to multiple reports of concerning photos on Snap Chat. One of the posts consisted of a firearm lying on top of a package of cigarettes and the second showed a case of bullets. Both posts had “Chinook High School” written across them.

Police proceeded to speak to multiple witnesses who observed the posts and the school was notified of the incident during the early morning hours. All school staff and officials have fully cooperated with the investigation.

Prior to the start of classes, multiple officers were deployed to the west side high school to ensure the safety of all staff and students.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. an 18-year-old male student was taken into custody at the school without incident and has been interviewed in relation to the posts.

At this time the investigation is ongoing, however police do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the school.

Police commend the members of the public who reported the suspicious posts and encourage citizens to continue to do so. Any perceived threat will always been taken seriously and treated as credible. The safety of our citizens is our number one priority.
