Lethbridge Regional Police are investigating the sudden death of a 37-year-old woman.
On Sept. 17, 2014 at approximately 12:30 p.m. police responded to a report that a male had assaulted a female along the 400 block of 5 Street South. Police attended and located the victim with a group of people. While speaking to police the woman experienced medical distress and an ambulance was called. EMS subsequently transported her to hospital.
Witnesses reported the woman had been assaulted by a male acquaintance who had left the area prior to police arrival. At approximately 12:40 p.m. police located the 40-year-old male subject a short distance away and he was arrested in connection with the assault.
Later in the afternoon police were notified the woman had died in hospital.
At this time the investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the woman’s death. An autopsy has been scheduled for today at the Medical Examiner’s office in Calgary.
No further information, including the victim’s identity, will be released pending the results of the autopsy and whether the woman’s death is determined to be criminal in nature, or not.
