Two men charged with arson for fraudulent gain

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged two men with arson in connection with a truck fire that occurred last November.

On Nov. 4, 2013 police and the fire department responded to a truck fire along Cougar Bay North. The fire was determined to be arson, however no suspects were identified at the time. The truck sustained extensive damage and the owner subsequently received an insurance payout.

The investigation has been ongoing since last November and in January police received new information about the circumstances of the fire. Following further investigation the insurance claim was determined to be fraudulent.

Sheldon Martin Janiga, 20, of Blairmore and Blake Michael Powell, 18, of Taber, are each charged with arson to property, arson endangering life, arson for a fraudulent purpose and possession of incendiary material.

Both have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court Feb. 28.
