Victim of assault has died in hospital; two persons of interest in custody

A 47-year-old Lethbridge man, who was assaulted Monday night in a south side alley, died in hospital earlier this afternoon and the matter is now being treated as a homicide.

On Aug. 31, 2015 at approximately 9:30 p.m. police and EMS responded to a report of a male who had been assaulted and was unconscious in the alley along the 900 block of 17 Street South. The victim was transported to hospital with severe head trauma and upon examination was found to also have significant internal injuries. He subsequently died earlier this afternoon.

At this time the victim’s identity will not be released pending notification of the next of kin. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Calgary to confirm the cause and manner of death.

“We understand what happened is very concerning to neighbours in the area and we want to assure the community there is no evidence to suggest any ongoing risk to the general public,” said Kristen Harding, Executive Officer.

Police have identified two persons of interest and both have been taken into custody for questioning, however neither has been charged with a criminal offence at this time.
