Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigating in-custody death
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of a 22-year-old man.
On July 12, 2026, police responded to a report of a male on the High Level Bridge and three officers attended. A lone officer approached the male on the bridge and an interaction between the two resulted in the male moving away from the officer. The male then went over the bridge and was pronounced deceased at the scene. None of the officers were injured.
As required by the Alberta Police Act, the CEO of the Police Review Commission was notified and ASIRT was directed to conduct an independent investigation.
ASIRT investigators arrived in Lethbridge on July 13 and the investigation is ongoing.
ASIRT and the Police Review Commission work together to provide independent, transparent oversight of law enforcement in Alberta. ASIRT investigates incidents or complaints involving serious injury, death and matters of a serious or sensitive nature.
