Driver criminally charged for travelling more than double the speed limit in poor road conditions

MEDIA RELEASE

Lethbridge Police have charged a 21-year-old man with dangerous driving for travelling more than double the speed limit along a snow and ice covered road on the northside.

On January 10, a member of the Traffic Response Unit was on patrol along 13 Street North when he recorded a vehicle travelling 113 km/h in the 50 km/h zone. The officer was able to catch up with the vehicle after it stopped for a red light and subsequently conducted a traffic stop. Given the extreme speed and significant risk to public safety, the driver was criminally charged.

Liam David Ball, 21, of Lethbridge, is charged with one count of dangerous driving and is scheduled to appear in court March 7.

Police are advising all motorists to always drive cautiously and ensure driving behaviour is adjusted according to the road and weather conditions.

Tips for winter driver include:

  • Slow down! Travel at a safe speed reflective of the current conditions
  • Increase your following distance to ensure you have ample time and space to react to the unexpected. Remember, four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop!
  • Pay extra attention and use the utmost caution at all intersections, exit ramps and bridge decks
  • Avoid overtaking vehicles unless absolutely necessary
  • Allow more time for all driving maneuvers – stopping, changing lanes, passing a vehicle, proceeding through an intersection
  • Remove all snow and ice from your front, rear and side windows to ensure maximum visibility
  • Leave a little early to allow extra time to arrive at your destination
  • Check weather/road condition reports before heading out
