Motorcyclist ticketed for speeding at over 150 km/h during targeted traffic enforcement project
Lethbridge Police are reminding motorcyclists and all drivers that there is a zero-tolerance approach to high-risk and nuisance-based driving behaviours after a motorcyclist was ticketed for excessive speeding during a targeted traffic enforcement project conducted this past weekend.
On June 27 at approximately 10:30 p.m., a motorcycle officer conducting traffic enforcement observed a group of motorcycles travelling eastbound on Scenic Drive South. The officer continued to monitor the group as they stopped for a red light at 43 Street. When the light turned green, the group accelerated rapidly. As the officer attempted to catch up to the lead motorcycle, another rider overtook the officer at a speed exceeding 150 km/h; approximately 90 km/h over the posted speed limit.
The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old male, was pulled over and issued violation tickets for careless driving, speeding, stunting, and racing without a permit. A notice was also issued under Section 66 of the Traffic Safety Act, requiring that the motorcycle’s muffler to be brought into compliance within 30 days. The motorcycle was then privately towed and the license plate seized.
In total, 70 violation tickets were handed out during the targeted enforcement initiative. Police also issued one Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Fail, towed two vehicles for equipment-related violations, and towed another three vehicles for operating without valid insurance.
The targeted traffic enforcement initiative was launched in 2022 and continues each summer, when high-risk and nuisance driving typically increase due to favourable weather and road conditions. The project is ongoing in 2026.
Members of the Traffic Response Unit (TRU) will provide a highly visible police presence during these targeted projects to deter illegal driving activity and conduct enforcement. This work is in addition to regular traffic enforcement conducted by TRU and patrol officers.
The public is encouraged to report violations and ongoing high-risk driving behaviour by calling 403-328-4444. Public reports and traffic data analysis help guide enforcement priorities and police deployment.
