New Facility Dog to provide support to the community

Back-up has arrived! The Lethbridge Police Service is pleased to announce a second Facility Dog has been placed with the Victim/Witness Services Unit.

DWW Cruiser, a specially trained four-year-old black Lab, will work alongside the V/WSU’s first Facility Dog, DWW Kourt. Together, the new dynamic duo will play a crucial role in reducing stress and providing comfort during difficult times.

DWW Kourt, who joined the team in 2022, has already had a profound impact supporting LPS employee wellness, ensuring sworn and civilian staff are at their best when responding to the community’s needs. DWW Cruiser’s focus will be supporting community members by helping to reduce anxiety and stress for victims and witnesses, particularly during police interviews and while testifying in court.

“This sweet pup is a long-awaited addition to our V/WSU team,” said Catherine Pooley, V/WSU Program Manager and primary handler for DWW Cruiser. “He will be a grounding presence and an incredible source of strength for those who need him. We can’t wait to see the difference he will make and are confident he will be the best part of some of the toughest situations members of our community could face.”

DWW Cruiser has undergone extensive training through Dogs With Wings Assistance Dog Society and he specializes in providing emotional support, assisting in crisis situations and helping individuals cope with trauma.

“When DWW Kourt called for back-up, DWW Cruiser responded with enthusiasm,” said Amanda Bourgouin, Dogs with Wings Executive Director. “This partnership embodies our mission by supporting vulnerable individuals, and we are excited to see the positive impact DWW Cruiser will have alongside DWW Kourt."

DWW Cruiser is currently transitioning to his new role and acclimating to life with his handlers and colleagues. This process takes approximately three months and then he will be ready to start working with victims.
