Police charge unlicensed, uninsured driver in connection with injury collision
Lethbridge Police have charged a 64-year-old male with dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection with an injury collision that shut down traffic along Crowsnest Trail Wednesday afternoon.
On July 29, at approximately 2:16 p.m., police responded to a report of an injury collision along Highway 3. Investigation determined a male operating a Chevrolet Uplander was westbound on Highway 3 and failed to stop at a red light at the 30 Street North intersection. The Uplander subsequently struck a Ford Focus that was proceeding through a green light to make an eastbound turn. The 26-year-old female driver of the Ford was not injured.
Two passengers in the Uplander sustained injuries – a 52-year-old female and 70-year-old female – who were both transported to hospital by EMS. A 32-year-old male, seven-year-old girl and nine-year-old boy, who were also passengers in the Uplander, were treated by EMS at the scene.
Further investigation determined the male driver displayed signs of impairment, did not have a driver’s license and the vehicle was uninsured. Following breathalyzer testing, he was issued an IRS Caution and criminally charged.
A 64-year-old Cardston male, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the passenger victims, is charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm. He was also issued violation tickets for driving an uninsured vehicle, operating a vehicle without a subsisting license, failing to stop at a red light, careless driving, transporting liquor in a vehicle within easy access of an occupant and the Uplander was seized.
The male has been released from custody with conditions that he not be behind the steering wheel of any vehicle without being properly licensed and insured and not to be behind the wheel of any motor vehicle without the registered owner present. He is scheduled to appear in court September 9 to answer to the criminal charge.
