Repeat traffic offenders risk vehicle being removed from the road

Lethbridge Police are reminding motorists that repeat traffic offenders who have not remedied previously identified violations are subject to the seizure of their license plate and registration. Their vehicle may also be towed and mandatory repairs must be completed before the vehicle will be allowed back on the road.

During a recent traffic enforcement project – part of an ongoing operation that will continue throughout the year targeting speeding, excessive vehicle noise, stunting, racing and other illegal behaviours – a motorcycle with an after-market muffler was towed and the license plate and registration were seized by police. The driver had previously been ticketed for equipment violations. When police confirm the factory muffler is re-installed the motorcycle will be permitted to return to the road.

In addition, police issued 49 tickets for a variety of equipment violations and other traffic offences.

The initiative was first launched 2022 and has taken place during the summer months each year to address high-risk and nuisance driving behaviours which typically increase when the weather warms up and road conditions are more accommodating. The project will involve a series of targeted enforcement operations and police are warning motorists there will be zero tolerance.

Members of the Traffic Response Unit will provide a highly visible police presence during these targeted projects to deter illegal driving activity and conduct enforcement. This initiative is over and above day-to-day traffic enforcement that is conducted by TRU members and other patrol officers.

The public can help by continuing to report violations and chronic, high-risk driving behaviour whenever and wherever it is observed. Call 403-328-4444. Public complaints and analysis of traffic data, help guide police deployment and enforcement efforts.
