Charges pending in connection with aggravated assault of senior citizen

Lethbridge Police arrested a 34-year-old male and charges are pending in connection with an incident where an 80-year-old man was assaulted and sustained life-threatening injuries. 

On September 10 around noon, police and EMS responded to a report of an injured elderly male along the 1200 block of 2 A Avenue North. Investigation determined the senior’s bike and been stolen from outside a business and when he confronted the male subject a physical altercation ensued. The subject punched the elderly male causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement. The subject fled the scene prior to police arrival. 

EMS transported the 80-year-old victim to Chinook Regional Hospital and due to the extent of his injuries he was subsequently airlifted to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where he remains in critical condition. 

Witnesses provided police with images of the subject and he was identified by officers. Extensive police resources were deployed as part of the investigation and at approximately 8 p.m. the subject called dispatch to turn himself in. He was arrested a short time later at a northside home without incident. 

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
