New Drivers
Lethbridge Police, along with other law enforcement agencies across the province, are focusing on new drivers throughout August. The goal of the monthly Select Traffic Enforcement Program is to reduce collisions and make our roadways safer for everyone.
Did you know?
- In Alberta in 2024, males 18 to 19 years-old had the highest involvement rate of all drivers in casualty collisions. The most common causes were following too closely, running off the road and making an unsafe left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle
- Regardless of age, all new drivers are part of the Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) program
- All GDL drivers must have a zero level of alcohol or drugs when driving
- Learner drivers (Class 7) must be accompanied by a fully licensed, non-GDL driver who is 18 or older and seated beside them and may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
- GDL drivers cannot have more passengers than seatbelts
- GDL drivers will be suspended if eight or more demerit points are accumulated
Road to success:
- New drivers are encouraged to enroll in a driver education program to learn more about operating a vehicle safely
- Develop an attitude of safe and responsible driving
- Learn, understand and apply all traffic laws and the rules of the road
- Always be aware of your surroundings, stay alert and avoid distractions
