Police charge male with attempted murder, assault with a weapon

Lethbridge Police have charged a 47-year-old Calgary man with attempted murder after multiple pedestrians were struck by a vehicle and injured last week in a southside parking lot.

On October 10 at approximately 6:30 p.m., police and EMS responded to numerous 911 calls reporting that a vehicle had struck multiple pedestrians in the parking lot of the Visitlethbridge.com Arena (formerly the Enmax Centre) along the 2500 block of Scenic Drive South and narrowly missed two others. The driver fled the area prior to police arrival.

A 77-year-old female, 77-year-old male and 46-year-old male, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital in stable condition.

The same vehicle then struck a Subaru Outback in the area of Mayor Magrath Drive and Scenic Drive South but did not stop.

A short time later the driver and vehicle were reported at a convenience store along Bluefox Boulevard North. The driver had entered the store and attempted to purchase several items. When his card was declined he proceeded to threaten a staff member and left with the merchandise.

Police subsequently located the vehicle along Riverbottom Road North near Softball Valley where the driver was arrested without incident.

Following further investigation, evidence obtained showed the subject had intended to hit the victims with his vehicle. He was not impaired at the time of the incidents and the victims are all unknown to him.

Christopher David Hegg, is charged with five counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, uttering threats and theft under $5,000.

Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Hegg was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court October 15.
