Police warn job seekers about fraudulent criminal courier work
The Lethbridge Police Service is warning residents to be cautious of fraudulent job postings that may involve criminal courier work.
With the recent grandparent scam in Lethbridge, police have become increasingly aware that job seekers are also being targeted by scammers. Using email, social media or other local buy and sell forums like Kijiji, fraudsters are posting delivery driver positions that may actually involve moving stolen goods, transporting drugs, or laundering money. Scammers often use these unsuspecting people as “mules” to distance themselves from the crime. Accepting such work - knowingly or unknowingly - can result in serious criminal charges.
Job seekers are advised to watch for the following warning signs:
- The job offer is unsolicited – you didn’t apply for the position
- The job postings are vague and the employer information is minimal (only first names are used and there is no real company address, phone number or online presence)
- The application process is informal/atypical and very little job experience required for the position (e.g. “To apply, just send us a picture of your driver’s license!”)
- You’re asked to pick up and deliver packages without knowing what they contain
- You’re instructed to deposit or transfer money through your personal account
- Communication with the employer is rushed or vague, and usually only occurs through text/email
To protect yourself - and other vulnerable community members - ensure that you:
- Research the employer before accepting a job
- Trust your instincts - if it feels too good to be true, it probably is
- Never transfer money or deliver packages for strangers
Anyone who feels that they may have been targeted by this type of scam is asked to contact the Lethbridge Police Service at 403-328-4444 to file a report.
