Winter driving safety

With more snow in the forecast this week, Lethbridge Police are reminding motorists to make road safety a priority no matter how much wintery weather Mother Nature has in store.
  • Clear your vehicle of all ice and snow before hitting the road
  • Slow down and drive at a speed that matches the weather and road conditions
  • Give yourself extra time for all maneuvers - stopping, changing lanes, and passing
  • Increase your following distance to allow more time to react to the unexpected
  • Avoid overtaking large vehicles or snowplows unless absolutely necessary
  • Turn on your headlights to improve visibility for yourself and others
  • Brake and steer gently - sudden movements can cause your vehicle to skid. Four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop
  • Stay alert. Scan ahead for hazards and use extra caution at intersections, ramps, and bridges
  • Plan ahead and leave extra time to to reach your destination
